Decorate an Umbrella for a Public Space Activation in Your Neighborhood!

Earth Day Umbrella Stroll (6).png

We’re looking forward to our 2nd annual Umbrella Stroll! This year, we’ll be activating Upper 14th Street NW on April 20th from 12-3 PM for an Earth Day themed event.  We are looking for ten local artists or community-based organizations (schools, civic associations, non-profits) to decorate umbrellas for a short-term public arts project in local businesses and vacant spaces.

What we’ll provide:

Uptown Main Street will provide a $30 reimbursable stipend for materials and an umbrella for you to decorate.

What you’ll create:

A decorated umbrella that focuses on one of the following themes: sustainability, springtime, arts & culture or community history.   Umbrellas will be displayed in vacant spaces or in local businesses in advance of the stroll. Applicants will need to submit an artist’s brief with their installation, which Uptown Main Street will print and display along with the work in English and Spanish.

How to apply:

Please fill out this short google form expressing interest in participating in the project.  Tell us about your vision and why you’d like to bring art to 14th Street.  Examples of previous work are preferred but not required.  All are encouraged to apply! Selections will be made by the Promotions Committee and artists will be chosen by March 29th.

The deadline:

Submit your interest form and materials by March 25th by midnight.

The fine print:

Applicants will need to sign a memorandum of understanding and an invoice to be reimbursed by Uptown Main Street after being selected.  UMS retains the right to remove any installation at any time. All work will be returned to the artists after the installation concludes in late April.

Send us an email if you have any questions at info@uptownmainstreet.org!
