Meet the Main Street: Kennedy Counseling Collective
“Meet the Main Street” is back and caught up this week with the owners of Kennedy Counseling Collective. Kennedy Counseling opened an office in The Basil Building at 508 Kennedy Street NW in 2017 after working in neighboring communities and realizing a need for high-quality counseling close to home for the neighborhood. We invite you to learn more about the owners and all that Kennedy Counseling has to offer our community below!
Tell us about your business!
We are Marjorie Strachman Miller and Heidi Vanderwerff, owners of Kennedy Counseling Collective. We chose this name as we feel a strong sense of allegiance to the Kennedy Street corridor. We are also a “collective” of therapists who work collaboratively with one another and with the community. As a group, we are experienced in providing counseling for all stages of life. We offer child play therapy, maternal mental health support, family therapy, individual counseling, relationship counseling, identity formation, and caregiver support.
What is your favorite thing about supporting the community?
We are energized by the passion from the businesses and services in the community. We are so proud to be a part of this growth by bringing counseling services to individuals and families to Kennedy Street. The vast majority of our clients live within a short walk of our office. Others who travel from outside the neighborhood are introduced to all that Kennedy Street has to offer!
What would you like to see happen in our community?
The community is so bonded and strong that we hope to see continued growth and support among the range of businesses along Kennedy Street. We would like to see our community lead healthy lives so that we can continue to support one another during inevitable times of struggle. In doing our part, Kennedy Counseling provides pro bono counseling to the residents at The Kennedy family shelter. We love to be involved, and hope that our community continues to appreciate the long-time businesses while being welcoming of newer businesses like ours!
What is your favorite thing to do on your day off?
We enjoy spending time with our families and recharging on our own. We love all that DC has to offer families. We have also been known to go out just the two of us to take advantage of Kennedy Street’s dining offerings.
