“Meet the Main Street” is back in action! Today, we are talking to Drew Schneider, founder and visionary behind the acclaimed Petworth News and our official media partner. We invite you to learn more about our local story teller.

Tell us about your business! When was it founded and why?

Petworth News was started on Facebook in early 2015 to provide hyperlocal news and information, helping to keep neighbors informed and engaged with each other. The Petworth News website launched in June 2015 and was chosen by Washington City Paper readers as runner-up Best Community Blog in their 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Readers' Choice Polls, was profiled by Curbed DC and named by The Washington Post as one of their favorite DC blogs. I received a Community Cornerstone Award from DC Councilmember Anita Bonds in December 2018 for my local activism. Petworth News was in consideration for a 2018 Pulitzer Prize in Local Journalism for the story about Momma, a pitbull left out in the cold that went viral nationally and directly led to new animal welfare legislation in DC. Petworth News also helped reunite a little girl and her stuffed bunny rabbit — the best kind of success for a local news website!

What is your favorite thing about this community?

Petworth has a such a strong sense of community. As a neighborhood, it’s a great place to live, raise a family and feel connected to your neighbors.

What would you like to see happen in our community in the next 5 years?

I’d like to see more people of all walks of life and passions living here, contributing to the fabric of diversity and culture.  (I’d like to see more affordable, residential buildings and less row house conversions.)

What do you like to do for fun in Uptown?

The farmers’ markets, the festivals, the great restaurants and bars, the parks and Circles… there is so much going on in this small area of the nation’s capital!
